Mentor

Definition of Mentoring A one-to-one, non judgmental relationship in which an individual voluntarily gives time and support to encourage another, usually to achieve certain goals. The relationship is typically developed in a time of transition in the mentee’s life and last for a significant and sustained period of time.

The role of a volunteer Mentor is to meet with a person on a weekly (or agreed regular) basis as arranged at a mutually agreed time and place. They act as a role model and can become a confidant providing a listening ear and emotional and practical support. They enable a person to explore their options using communication skills and enable decision making.

The volunteer mentors on this project are ordinary people from all walks of life who have their own personal experiences and often ‘got the T-shirt’ who want to give some thing back. They have the ability to build effective relationships and share experiences, they have good active listening and communication skills and the ability to enthuse and motivate people. They are committed and have a positive attitude towards recovery with a non-judgmental and empathetic approach. 

All the volunteers attend a NOCN (National Open College Network) level 2 award in mentoring training programme, with additional training in mental health awareness. They are required to have an enhanced CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) check and 2 satisfactory personal references and a successful post course interview before they become accepted ass a volunteer mentor.
